When the Foundations are being Destroyed

A Sermon based on Psa 11:1-3 & Acts 4:23-31 by Ashwin Ramani.  A preacher was speaking in a big church and in his long sermon he kept saying, “Jesus is the answer, Jesus is the answer.” At the close of the sermon one person approached the preacher and said, “Pastor you kept saying in your sermon Jesus is the answer. I want to know what is the question?” Sometimes, it’s worth taking time to ponder the questions. In the Book of Psalms the Psalmist raises several questions. I want to focus on one of them because I believe it is a critical question for Christians today. Let me read to you Psa 11:1-3 (New International Version) In the LORD I … Read entire article »

Fear Factor!

The acute awareness of the presence of God’s power produces in me a sense of awe and calls forth from me honor, respect and reverence to Him. To fear the LORD is to hate evil. “I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.” Prov 8:13 (NIV) The Lord declares, these six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19). Where there is fear of the Lord, there is integrity! Job 31 … Read entire article »

Workaholics Anonymous

We live in a fast paced world where the worth of a person is often measured in terms of one’s multi-level involvement. Today, multi-tasking is not just fashionable but covetable! We are made to believe that more work is good and less work is bad. Books stands are overflowing with stuff that tells us how to make most out of our 24 hr day. I bet sitting idle in a place for more than a couple of hours will make many of us feel uncomfortable or even guilty. (Perhaps, some of us need immediate enrollment in Workaholics Anonymous!). Belonging to a generation whose buzz word is impatience,   I wonder how many of us are able … Read entire article »

Weeping of a rare kind!

Have you wondered why some people are so motivated and passionate in the Lord’s work while the majority are callous and indifferent? There must be something about them! The Scripture presents several people who gave their heart and soul for the Lord. Nehemiah is undoubtedly one of those. Can you imagine a high profile national leader breaking down and weeping inconsolably over a national issue? Unthinkable! It seldom happens in India. The Bible tells us that Nehemiah wept over the ruined state of Jerusalem for a long time (Neh.1:4). I’m sure that all of us have shed tears at various times in our life (And crying isn’t a bad thing!). But I wonder how many … Read entire article »

Beyond Myself!

We live in a world where self-centeredness rules. A majority of people out here cannot even think of anything apart from themselves, their families, their future, their careers, their children, their security, their comfort, so on and so forth. An average person is engrossed in his or her self. Unfortunately, this is true as well with so many of us the children of God. I realize that even in God’s service it is possible to become so pre-occupied with one’s own self – my church, my denomination, my seminary, my ministry, my family, my career, my reputation, my security, my comfort and my convenience. Something for us to ponder from Nehemiah chapter one – although Nehemiah … Read entire article »

The Big Picture

The book of Nehemiah begins with a crisis – an unfinished task. Despite the fact thousands of exiles had returned home and got resettled over a few decades, the walls around Jerusalem still remained in ruins. When we look at the history of God’s chosen people in the Old Testament we see God using several individuals at different times in fulfilling his purpose for the nation of Israel. Beginning with Abraham we see a pattern. Whenever there was a need in His kingdom, an unfinished task in His Mission, God always looked out for individuals to partner with Him. Ezek.22:30 reads “I looked out for someone among them…” During the great famine that swept across the … Read entire article »

Learning from Lamentations!

The Book of Psalms is considered to be a book of praise to God. It is a collection of prayers and songs written by different people. However, a recurring theme in the Psalms is the theme of lament. The Psalmists are honest in expressing their feelings to God. At times they are jubilant and praise God for His many blessings. But they also express the despair and inner turmoil of their heart in the difficult times. Almost one-third of the Book of Psalms could be classified as lament. The lament Psalms are written both from an individual and community point of view. Some examples of individual lament are Psalms 6, 13, 22, 69, and 88 … Read entire article »

One man’s commitment to the cause of Christ…

Charles T. Studd was a servant of Christ who faithfully served His Saviour in China, India, and Africa. As Alfred Buxton in the forward to the book intitled C.T. Studd: Cricketer & Pioneer by Norman Grubb states: “C.T.’s life stands as some rugged Gibraltar — a sign to all succeeding generations that it is worth while to lose all this world can offer and stake everything on the world to come. His life … Read entire article »
